What to Do in Ljubljana

Ljubljana is as well as a great base for exploring other parts of Slovenia.

Ljubljana is beautiful for Christmas and New Year holidays, decorated and sparkling.


1. Take a stroll along the river Ljubljanica

The first thing you should do in Ljubljana is to take a stroll down the Ljubljanica River and see the boats passing by. Have a sit in one of cafés and sip your drink while soaking the great atmosphere of the city.

2. Visit Ljubljana Castle (by funicular or on foot)

Visit Ljubljana Castle, standing on a hill above the city for about 900 years. From there you can enjoy amazing views of the city and capture stunning photos for your memory. Reach Ljubljana Castle, by funicular from the town.

Once there, you can experience history at the projection in the Virtual Castle, at the permanent installation of Slovenian history, the Penitentiary, the Castel Armory and Ljubljana, in the Puppetry Museum (ideal for all ages).

If you got hungry, sit down in one of the restaurants or Castle Café or wine shop. There are some souvenir shops there.

You can even save a dragon in a fun adventure game Escape Castle. Escape Castle runs every 30 minutes, last entry is two hours before the castle's closing time. The castle also offer a range of tours such as guided viewings of the Castle.

The entrance fee is €12 for adults and €8.40 for children (7-18).



3. Explore historic centre

France Preseren Square in Ljubljana

Once you find yourself on Preseren Square in Ljubljana, you are in the heart of the historic Ljubljana Old Town. Here you'll see the Franciscan Church (with its pink facade), the monument of the poet France Preseren and Triple Bridge.

Once you cross the Triple Bridge, you are already at the Central Market. Just far steps from here you'll find famous Dragon Bridge (one of the landmarks of Ljubljana). Bars and cafes in the lively Petkovsek Embankment are great for a break from sightseeing.

The Mestni Trg Square is one of the centres of the medieval city. Here you'll find Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers. Streets leading deeper into the medieval part of the city are today dotted with a number of great restaurants and small artisan shops.
